Novel Consultations with Jen Michalski

We are thrilled to have Jen Michalski on board to offer consultations on in-progress novel manuscripts!

Jen is a true fiction pro. Her debut novel The Tide King won our very own Big Moose Prize. She’s the author of a second novel and two collections of short fiction. With fiction in over 100 publications (Poets & Writers, failbetter, storySouth, Barrelhouse, PANK, Hobart, need we go on…) and as the founding editor of the weekly literary journal jmww, she’s a fiction maven who really knows her stuff.

Here’s the deal:

Manuscripts may be up to 300 pages in length. The text should be double spaced and formatted in 12 point font. The consulting fee is $700. The deadline to submit work for this consultation program is May 31 and Jen will respond with her critique by June 30. However, Jen can only take five novels under her wing this month. Be sure to submit your manuscript soon, because as soon as her queue is full, our consultation program for this month will be closed.

Statement of Purpose

“There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.”
― W. Somerset Maugham

It often feels like that, doesn’t it? In my experience as a writer, however, readers respond to novels in three ways: they are drawn to plot, character, and the writing. In my consultations, I’ll discuss your manuscript with you in these three areas, as well as provide my general impressions in terms of tone and intent to make sure the novel you’re sending to agents and publishers most closely reflects your vision.
